D is for Drosera Rotundifolia

12/21/2016

The first day of winter is today. The solstice. The days are going to now get longer! And what does that have to do with Drosera? Well, in winter, we find that we get colds easier and those pesky coughs as well. Drosera is also known as the Round-leaved Sundew or the Common Sundew. The name comes from the greek: droseros, which means dewy. It refers to the appearance of the leaves, on which the small drops of sticky fluid look like dew drops, when the sun shines on them. And when the sun shines on the plant, the secretion from the leaves is the most abundant. Those drops are used to trap unsuspecting insects into the beautiful flower. "Rotundifolia" means 'round-leaved.'

Drosera is most famous in homeopathy for helping with croupy coughs that are non-stop and worse after midnight. The cough can even produce a bloody nose. The seemingly harmless sundew is a very potent plant. And when diluted many times, it has even more power as homeopathic remedies do. So, this is a remedy not to give unless one knows what one is doing...The whooping cough is really the most similar to this remedy, so unless the cough is really strong and spasmodic, stay away from this carnivorous plant! Samuel Hahnemman (the father of homeopathy) himself says, "This herb is one of our most powerful medicinal plants, and only use it in the 30c potency!"

There are other remedies that will help your cough, but they don't begin with D, so listen to this jingle: this winter will be cough-free--but if it isn't, try homeopathy!
(but probably not Drosera Rotundifolia)
